The Premier League game between Arsenal and Manchester City on October 19 has been postponed to compensate for the Europa League clash against PSV Eindhoven.
The Gunners were initially due to play the Dutch giants at the Emirates Stadium this Thursday, but severe limitations on police resources after the Queen’s passing meant that it had to be postponed.
However, Arsenal still needed to complete the fixture before the World Cup break, and it has now been confirmed that the club will host PSV on Thursday, October 20 (6pm BST).
PSV don’t have any midweek game during that period. The news will come as a sigh of relief for the Gunners as they may have required to forfeit the fixture if there was no other means.
Meanwhile, the Premier League have yet to reveal the new schedule for the postponed games against Everton as well as Manchester City, but both fixtures definitely won’t happen this year.
With the cramped schedule due to the winter World Cup, there will be a game every three days until the tournament in late November. Arsenal will need to wait until 2023 to play both matches.
The postponement of the City clash can be regarded as a blessing in disguise for Arsenal, considering the Europa League fixture could offer Mikel Arteta with more room for rotation.
The fixture list looked daunting with Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Leeds United and Manchester City to face within 19 days. It remains to be seen when the Gunners will now host the Cityzens.
Arsenal will want to go into the September international break on a high. Despite a defeat to Manchester United earlier this month, they remain top of the Premier League standings.
They are expected to face London rivals Brentford away in Sunday’s mid-day kick-off.
