Lagos, Nigeria — The Department of State Services (DSS) on Sunday arrested Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, from the United States. His arrest is reportedly connected to a nationwide protest scheduled for October 1.
Sowore, a prominent activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, previously led a protest in August alongside other civil society organizations under the banner of #EndBadGovernance.
According to Sowore, he was detained by Nigerian Immigration officials, who also seized his passport immediately after his arrival in Nigeria. He shared his experience on social media, tweeting: “Upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me.”
Sowore further alleged that the action was part of a broader effort by the current administration, under President Bola Tinubu, to suppress dissent ahead of the planned protests. He urged citizens to resist tyranny and support the scheduled October 1 demonstrations.
“In case this becomes another prolonged detention, I urge our citizens to stop tyranny by all acceptable means, engaging in the planned direct actions slated for October 1st and beyond,” Sowore tweeted.
However, in a later tweet, Sowore confirmed his release and the return of his passport. “I have just been released by Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention, and my passport returned. #RevolutionNow,” he wrote.
The upcoming protest is expected to draw attention to issues of governance in Nigeria, with Sowore continuing his calls for action against what he describes as oppressive policies.
