Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed openness to serving as Nigeria’s Vice President in the future, though with specific conditions.
In a recent interview on New Central TV, aired via YouTube, Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, emphasized that his primary goal is to contribute to Nigeria’s progress, noting that strong leadership is crucial for the country’s next general election in 2027.
When asked about the possibility of accepting a vice-presidential role, Obi responded, “I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If I see people who can do the work better, I will consider being Vice President.”
Despite this openness, Obi remained firm in his commitment to the Labour Party, ruling out any plans to switch political allegiances. He stated, “Yes, I would remain with Labour Party, and if anyone wants to negotiate or come together, they must clearly outline their objectives. I will not join anyone for state capture or just to win elections. They must explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind, and how we will address the millions of out-of-school children.”
Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election with over six million votes (25.4%), reiterated his commitment to Nigeria’s development. The election was won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with nearly 8.8 million votes (37.6%), while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) placed second with approximately seven million votes (29.9%).
