Professor Sir Ade Ojeniyi, an esteemed Nigerian scholar, medical expert, and humanitarian who passed on peacefully during his sleep on Friday. A distinguished professor of both Human and Animal Medicine, Sir Ojeniyi was a recipient of Denmark’s prestigious Knighthood, Order of the Dannebrog, recognizing his remarkable contributions to health and humanity.
Sir Ojeniyi’s illustrious career spanned several decades in medicine, public health, and education. He made groundbreaking advancements in combating infectious diseases and improving healthcare access globally, earning international recognition. Most notably, during his tenure as Chief Physician and Chief Medical Adviser to the Government of Greenland, he launched the world’s first cervical cancer vaccination program in 2007.
His legacy extends beyond medical achievements. As the first Black man to be knighted in Scandinavia, Sir Ojeniyi’s influence reached far beyond his profession. His commitment to social justice and his significant role in advancing medical education left an indelible mark on both the medical field and the global community. His dedication to the One Health initiative—a holistic approach connecting human, animal, and environmental health—was further acknowledged through the prestigious Golden Eagle Head Cane Award.
His passing represents an immense loss to the world, but his extraordinary contributions continue to inspire future generations.
