LONDON — President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria met with King Charles III on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace, marking their first official meeting since the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year. The private meeting, held at the King’s request, underscored the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
During the meeting, both leaders focused on pressing global and regional matters, with climate change taking center stage. They emphasized the urgency and complexity of tackling environmental challenges, a priority for both nations.

The discussions also looked ahead to the upcoming COP29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, exploring avenues for future collaboration. President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to combating climate change, while balancing the country’s energy security needs, and pledged support for global sustainability efforts.
Additionally, the two leaders exchanged ideas on innovative climate financing, aiming to strengthen partnerships that leverage Nigeria’s leadership in Africa and the Commonwealth.
The meeting highlighted the potential for stronger UK-Nigeria relations as both nations seek to address global challenges collaboratively.
