- Tinubu Unveils N230 Per Litre CNG as New Fuel Alternative
In a strategic move aimed at reducing fuel expenses and offering Nigerians a cost-effective alternative to petrol and diesel, President Bola Tinubu has introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at N230 per litre. This new initiative represents a significant shift towards affordable and cleaner energy sources, contrasting sharply with the current petrol price exceeding N900 per litre.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), launched under President Tinubu’s direction, is poised to provide substantial benefits by slashing fuel costs and aligning with the government’s energy diversification goals. This move is expected to offer immediate relief, particularly for those reliant on transportation for their livelihoods.
Project Director Mr. Micheal Oluwagbemi announced that as part of this initiative, President Tinubu has approved the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles used for transporting people, goods, and food.
“These kits, along with free installation, will be rolled out over the next 18 months, facilitating the transport sector’s transition to CNG and leveraging the significantly reduced fuel prices. The distribution will be conducted in collaboration with key partners to ensure nationwide reach,” said Oluwagbemi.
The first phase of the initiative will commence with the distribution of 10,000 free conversion kits this week. These kits will be allocated at no cost to transport operators through national transport associations such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Moove, UBER, and the Kaduna State Transport Authority (KSTA). This effort aims to ease the financial burden on both transport operators and the public.
The distribution will be managed by PCNGi in partnership with NIPCO Gas, which will oversee the conversion process through a network of authorized centres across Nigeria. These centres will provide the necessary infrastructure and services to support the transition to CNG.
By adopting CNG, Nigeria is moving towards a more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly fuel alternative. The government plans to distribute the full complement of one million conversion kits by the end of 2025, fully equipping the commercial transport sector for CNG use and reducing reliance on expensive petrol and diesel.
